Lake Eustis and The Harris Chain
At roughly 7,800 acres, Lake Eustis is the center of the Harris Chain. The Dead River in the southwest corner takes you to Lake Harris. Haines Creek on the western shore winds about six miles north to Lake Griffin and passes through the Burrell Lock at State Road 44. Over in the southeast corner, the Dora Canal runs about a mile under old cypress trees to Lake Dora.
Those runs are beautiful, and each one is hard on a boat in its own way. The Dora Canal has cypress stumps that show up when the water drops, and a stump strike can bend a prop or crack a lower unit. These lakes are also rich and weedy, so grass and debris love to plug water intakes, which is one of the most common reasons we see outboards overheat around Eustis.
